20. Daddy Yankee

Since the early 2000s, Daddy Yankee has been one of the most important figures in the development of reggaeton from the underground to the mainstream. With his 2004 popular breakthrough Barrio Fino—and in particular, the worldwide hit track “Gasolina”—he did more than anybody to establish reggaeton as a commercially viable music genre, crossing cultural barriers to become an international celebrity. Daddy Yankee set records early on and, despite not being under the supervision of a major label, became the best-selling Latin artist of the 2000s.

Multi-platinum-selling singing musician, on-screen personality, and actor Luis Fonsi has a long resume. Fonsi has achieved enormous success in the role he was first groomed for—singing dramatic romantic songs over expansive string arrangements—but it hardly captures the full scope of his abilities.

The great majority of his albums and songs have charted since the release of 1998’s Comenzaré, including the ground-breaking Paso a Paso and 2009’s Palabras del Silencio, both of which reached number one and remained there for many weeks. The Daddy Yankee-featuring song “Despacito” was released in January 2017, and its music video has been viewed five billion times.

She has been a part of the fringes of popular and traditional music since she was a teenager, and she also explores other genres including hip-hop, soul, and trap. No less a talent than flamenco guitarist Pepe Habichuela has praised her voice as “sharp and sweet, yet with a bite, like the old ones.”

Her 2018 follow-up, El Mal Querer, was a major critical and commercial breakthrough, topping Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart and ultimately winning a Grammy. Her 2017 debut album Los Ángeles garnered attention from the American public and earned her a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

He gained notoriety as the lead singer for the famed boy band Aventura before starting a hugely successful solo career in 2011. Santos brilliantly fuses Latin soul, hip-hop, trap, dance beats, pop, rock, and bachata while possessing a beautiful, silky, lushly romantic tenor. Wisin is a well-known rapper, singer, composer, and record producer (real name Juan Luis Morera Luna). He has a flourishing solo career and is also half of the well-known reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel. He has worked with more than 100 Latin pop, trap, and reggaeton artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias, and Sebastian Yatra.

Although Wisin & Yandel released three gold records between 2000 and 2004 (the latter year saw the release of Wisin’s debut solo album, El Sobreviviente), their commercial breakthrough came with 2005’s Pa’l Mundo. 2014 saw the release of Wisin’s top-charting sophomore album, El Regreso del Sobreviviente.

Reggaeton and trap are seamlessly incorporated into Anuel AA’s thoroughly urban music. He is a Puerto Rican MC. He is one of the rappers from Boricua who started the Latin trap genre. Since many other Latin trap stars became well-known while he was away, many people believe that Anuel AA is the real king of the genre. His three studio albums, Emmanuel (released in 2020), Los Dioses (co-released with Ozuna), and Las Leyendas Nunca Mueren (released in 2021), have all debuted at the top of the Top Latin Albums chart.
