Aṣa Delves Into The Creative Process Behind Her Music

Celebrated Nigerian singer Aṣa recently discussed the inspiration behind her music.

During an interview with GQ South Africa, Aṣa discussed her multilingual music and how it allows her to reach a worldwide audience. The highly regarded vocalist of French and Nigerian ancestry revealed that she tries to communicate her message through song in the most effective way possible for her audience.

Before relocating to France at an early age, Aṣa was born and raised in Oyo State, Nigeria. She talked about how her French and Nigerian ancestry affect her music, saying that her French connection helped her reach a worldwide audience while her Nigerian roots kept her African.

The multi-award-winning singer revealed that although her music is influenced by her Nigerian heritage, she approaches music production from a global perspective. The singer stated that she wants to write songs for everyone, even for those who might not be familiar with her own tongue or culture.

Her 2008 self-titled album earned the Headies Album of the Year award. Aṣa is well-known for her extensive research into Yoruba folk music, which she combines with jazz and funk components. On her 2022 album “V,” which had guest performances by Wizkid, the Nigerian Highlife duo Cavemen, and the internationally renowned Ghanaian singer Amaarae, she also experimented with Pop and Afrobeats.
