Ayra Starr Named As Spotify’s EQUAL Africa And Global Artist

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has been selected by Spotify as their EQUAL Africa and EQUAL Global artist for the month of May.

The singer was originally included in the EQUAL Africa program in November 2021, and this is her second time participating in the artist development program that aims to promote gender equity in music. She is now one of only two African artists to have been named an EQUAL Africa and an EQUAL Global artist, alongside fellow Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage.

Ayra Starr, the newest EQUAL talent, has signed with Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records and will gain from Spotify’s worldwide platform through collaborations, playlists, and content hubs.

Ayra Starr, a Grammy-nominated musician best known for songs like “Bloody Samaritan,” “Sability,” “Rush,” and “Rhythm & Blues,” is also the creator of the song “Commas,” which was released in February and has already received over 35 million plays on Spotify, as well as the recently released song “Bad Vibes,” featuring Seyi Vibes.

2021 saw the release of both her 19 & Dangerous LP and her self-titled first EP. Ayra Starr recently revealed that the end of the month would see the release of her new album, The Year I Turned 21.

In related news, Spotify disclosed that in 2023, Nigerian musicians earned over ₦25bn (about $17m) in streaming royalties on the platform, indicating a 2 500% increase since 2017.
