Nigerian singer Cynthia Morgan, also known as Madrina, has recently taken to social media to call out veteran actor Pete Edochie over a controversial handshake with Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife. The incident, which was captured in a trending video clip, has sparked a heated debate online about cultural respect and traditions.
The video shows Pete Edochie, who holds a chieftaincy title, along with other Nollywood stars at an event where the Ooni of Ife was a guest. Edochie approached the Yoruba monarch and extended his hand, greeting him in the Igbo traditional way. This act, which some see as a disregard for the Yoruba tradition, has stirred controversy.
Cynthia Morgan weighed in on the issue via her Instagram story. While she commended Edochie for respecting the Igbo tradition during his interaction with the Ooni, she also accused the veteran actor of disregarding the traditions and beliefs of other tribes.
Morgan shared a personal encounter with Edochie from 2016 in Okrika, Portharcourt, where she claimed the actor forced her to greet him in a way that is against her tradition. As a Benin lady, it’s a taboo for her to give a titled Igbo man like Pete Edochie an “Osiba,” but she alleges that Edochie made her do it against her will, thereby disrespecting the Benin tradition.
In her Instagram story, she wrote, “I like the fact that Pete Edochie’s tradition is being respected today and I hope he learns to respect other peoples traditions too moving forward. I.E That Benin Women cannot give a common or a titled ibo man an ‘osiba’ for no just reason. Unlike when he forced me to give him an osiba in 2016 in Okrika precisely. Cheers.”
This incident has sparked a conversation about the importance of respecting cultural differences, especially in a country as diverse as Nigeria. It remains to be seen how Pete Edochie will respond to these allegations.
