Lead Singer For Nazareth, Dan McCafferty, Dead At Age 76

The 76-year-old lead singer of the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth, Dan McCafferty, has passed away. Pete Agnew, the bassist in McCafferty’s band, posted the news of the singer’s passing to the group’s Facebook page on Tuesday.

The performer is best known for his piercing vocals on Nazareth’s top 10 hit cover of the Everly Brothers’ song Love Hurts, which became a mainstay of power ballads. He co-wrote many of the group’s songs throughout the 1970s.

No specific cause of death was given. In 2013, McCafferty stopped traveling with Nazareth because of the consequences of chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD). McCafferty, a 1946 native of Dunfermline, Scotland, together with Agnew, Manny Charlton on guitar, and Darrell Sweet on drums, co-founded Nazareth in 1968.

The lyric in The Band’s timeless song The Weight that refers to the Pennsylvania town of Nazareth rather than the Middle Eastern city served as the group’s naming cue. On their self-titled debut LP, which was released in 1971, the group had a powerful hard rock sound, though it frequently featured more pop-oriented covers.

By touring with Deep Purple, Nazareth raised its profile in the rock community. Roger Glover, the bassist for Deep Purple, later contributed some of his band’s aesthetic to Nazareth’s third album, Razamanaz, which was released in 1973.
