Missy Elliott Praises Nicki Minaj On Her VMA Michael Jackson Vanguard Video Award Honor, And She Responds

The return of Queen Radio has been the subject of some significant news from Minaj and company today (August 9), but it appears that Minaj will also be recognized at this year’s Video Music Awards.

It should come as no surprise that Minaj will get MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award because her legacy in rap is far from over and her impact and influence as a queen in hip-hop are unrivaled. In addition, Nicki Minaj will make her first appearance at the VMAs since 2018 and it will have been 11 years since she won her first award for Best Hip-Hop Video.

“Nicki has broken barriers for women in Hip Hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” stated Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events, Paramount and Chief Content Officer, Music, Paramount+.

Minaj will join previous Janet Jackson, Madonna, LL Cool J, and Missy Elliott recipients of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Even on Twitter, the latter acknowledged her by writing, “Congratulations to @NICKIMINAJ on this achievement [clapping emoji] [celebration emoji] .”

Minaj’s heartstrings were awoken by the brief mention. Before adding, “Nothing but Love & Respect for your iconic artistry,” the rapper said to her fellow music great that she had “kicked down the door.”
