Photojournalist Femi Adebesin-Kuti Passes Away, And The NUJ Is Saddened

Femi Adebesin-Kuti is a Nigerian photojournalist. After a brief illness, the person affectionately known as “Eshin” by close friends and coworkers passed away on January 5, 2023.

In expressing condolences to the bereaved family and members of the Photojournalist Association of Nigeria, Adeleye Ajayi, chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos chapter, stated, “We received the sad news of the passing of our dear brother, Femi Adebesin-Kuti, Photo Editor of the Guardian Newspapers which occurred in the early hours of today with great shock.”

Before his passing, Femi worked as a photojournalist for The Guardian Newspaper, providing illustrative stories of the front-page headlines or the major issues the paper was covering at the time. Alabi Williams, Editor of Guardian Newspapers, reported that despite the pressure of her position, Femi was cheerful and composed. Femi Adekoya, the business editor at the Guardian, who collaborated closely with Kuti, found it difficult to accept that he was referring to his colleague in the past tense.

Adekoya recalls Kuti as cheerful and “the life of the newsroom” in his memory. Adebesan-Kuti liked football in addition to documenting local events. As one of the official photographers covering the Super Eagles of Nigeria as they competed at the World Cups in South Africa in 2010 and Russia in 2018, his passion for the game brought him to the biggest platforms.
