Portable Publicly Apprehended For Unpaid Car Debt

Nigerian musician and street-pop sensation, Habeeb Okikiola, better known by his stage name Portable, has found himself in the limelight once more—but for all the wrong reasons.

Following a sequence of events surrounding an alleged outstanding debt relating to the purchase of a fancy vehicle, Nigerian authorities arrested the controversial musician on Tuesday, May 14. Internet rumors suggest that Portable’s problems are related to a transaction he had with Unique Motors, in which he allegedly purchased a black Mercedes-Benz GLE 350.

Emerging information indicates that the artist paid N13 million down payment on the car’s N27 million final cost. But then things got complicated once Portable’s car got into an accident, and the car dealer demanded full payment for the repairs.

A lawsuit was launched against the singer as a result of Temi Motors’ alleged unsuccessful attempts to collect the unpaid amount or seize the car. According to a leaked letter of undertaking, which was purportedly agreed upon on January 11, 2024, Portable was still in debt to the vehicle dealer for N14 million.

When police officers showed up on the scene bearing an arrest warrant for Portable, the situation became much more heated. In a shocking change of events, the musician was seen trying to escape custody by jumping a gate.

The video has since been extensively shared on social media. In spite of his best efforts, Portable was eventually caught and placed under arrest by the police.
