R&B sensation Saleka has released her hotly-anticipated debut album, Séance, casting an enchanting spell on the global music scene. The Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter’s mesmerizing album features 13 diverse tracks, showcasing her distinct musical sensibility and skill for key changes. Critics from prominent media outlets like Billboard, Vogue, Forbes, and V Magazine laud Saleka’s unique voice and intimate songwriting, dubbing her an R&B talent to watch.
Séance’s stand-out track “Samsara,” which premiered on NYLON, captures listeners with a moving depiction of a relationship’s final stages. Saleka uses the Sanskrit term “Samsara,” denoting the cycle of rebirth and reincarnation, as a metaphor for a relentless pattern of relationships. The song accompanies a striking visual wherein Saleka appears trapped in a hole, symbolizing the entanglements of her past relationships.
The album represents Saleka’s incredible journey as an Indian American musician, actress, and songwriter. Featuring her first-ever single “Clarity,” and other previously unreleased tracks, Séance blends influences from her disciplined upbringing with her desire to create fresh, unique sounds. The result is a spectrum of musical styles from jazz, R&B, hip-hop, to pop hooks, reflective of Saleka’s artistic versatility.
Saleka co-wrote and co-composed the album with Krispy, Ezemdi Akalonu, and Warner Meadows, fellow artists she met at Brown University. The team also served as the album’s producers, along with additional vocal productions by “Mama Jan” Smith. Joel Metzler engineered and mixed Séance alongside Shawn Grove.
