Sarz Discusses His Thoughts On The Influences That Shape Afrobeats

Nigerian music superstars Sarz and Lojay discussed their opinions on the meaning of the term “Afrobeats” during an appearance on Kiss FM UK.

With the increasing number of artists disassociating themselves from the label, Lojay was asked if he identifies with Afrobeats. The hit-maker retorted that he is an Afrobeats musician and that other musicians are free to break away from the moniker if they feel that it is putting them in a box.

In defining Afrobeats, Sarz said that the genre of music produced by African Americans is not as important as their culture and identity.

The 2020 joint EP “LV N ATTN” by longtime collaborators Sarz and Lojay produced the hit song “Monalisa.” The pair’s most recent release, “Billion,” has also been garnering favorable reviews.

The fact that Sarz and Lojay are embracing the Afrobeats label will be appreciated by those who have been vocal in their support of the movement despite artists shunning the tag. Before his most recent collaboration with Lojay, Sarz had dropped “Happiness,” which featured American rapper, Gunna, and Nigeria’s beloved Neo-fuji singer, Asake.

In a recent interview, the star producer hinted at a forthcoming album, which he said will be incredibly special like nothing Nigerians have experienced. Who are we not to believe Sarz?
