Seun Kuti Explains Why His Father, Fela Kuti, Got Married To 27 Women In One Day

Renowned Afrobeats musician, Seun Kuti, the son of the late great Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has shared insights into the reasons for his father’s unusual marriage to 27 women in one day.

This incredible incident, which happened in 1978, has long piqued people’s interest. Seun Kuti recently stated that his father’s choice to marry 27 women at once was a conscious attempt to preserve their dignity and reputation during a Skype visit on the “Fresh Off The Boat” program. The media at the time was calling Fela’s female band members and dancers, who shared housing with him, “prost!tutes” and exposing them to great scrutiny.

Seun Kuti claimed that his father was subjected to a great deal of pressure from the media, which was mostly centered on the women in his life. All of these women consented when Fela asked if they would be prepared to marry him in order to legalize their relationships and protect their honor from the bad press.

Seun Kuti had previously spoken out about being stigmatized for being Fela’s son before this most recent disclosure. Seun Kuti revealed that his fatherhood had an effect on his life, including his relationship, in a recent interview with actress Iyabo Ojo.

He emphasized that as a result, he was unable to visit his girlfriend’s father’s home. He says people often had preconceived ideas about him simply because he was Fela’s son.
