Seun Kuti Refutes Domestic Abuse Rumor; Says “My Wife Respects Me But I Am Scared Of Her”
The controversial Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has addressed concerns that he abuses his wife physically and verbally on social media. This comes after his recent release from the police net following his news-grabbing misdemeanor with an officer of the Nigerian Police Force.
In response to rumors that his wife Yetunde might be a victim of domestic abuse after a video of him yelling at her during his encounter with a police officer leaked online, Seun Kuti denied the accusation during an Instagram live session.
Recall how his wife Yetunde got out of the car and attempted to calm him down in the footage of him shoving and slapping a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge. She immediately complied with Seun’s command to get back in the car, though, as he did it in a commando-like manner.
Seun refuted the notion and said he was not a wife-beater. He denied that his wife is afraid of him, saying those connected with his family could attest to this. Seun Kuti said that individuals spreading these tales were jealous of a guy whose wife listens to him. He added that he has never hit his daughter, who is nine years old.
Seun explained, saying,
“The most important rumor I must dispel is the one that they said I’m beating my wife. They said I screamed at her to get into the car [in the viral video] , and she went into the car… That she is scared of me. My wife is not scared of me. Trust me, if you know anybody that knows us, I’m the one that’s scared of my wife. But my wife respects me,”
And I know that many of you Nigerian men were just jealous to see a man that can talk to his wife and his wife would listen. That’s the problem. It’s jealousy.
