Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has been granted bail and released from police custody after spending more than a week detained for an alleged assault on a police officer.
The incident, which catapulted Kuti into the national spotlight, was caught on video showing him engaging in a physical altercation with a police officer on Lagos’s third mainland bridge. The shocking event prompted swift action from the Nigerian police force, who arrested the singer in the early morning of Monday, May 15, 2023.
Charged with assaulting a police officer, an act in violation of Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act, Kuti was initially granted bail on May 16, 2023. Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun instructed the police to wrap up their investigation within 48 hours. However, Kuti’s release did not occur until a week later, on May 23, 2023.
According to the Punch, last Thursday, a Sabo-Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State ruled in favor of the police’s application to extend Kuti’s remand until today. The decision allowed the police to complete their investigation and awaited advice from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution.
Immediately following his release, Kuti took to Facebook to post a cryptic message, marking his regained freedom. The Afrobeat star expressed gratitude towards his wife, family, friends, and legal team, all of whom had supported him throughout the challenging ordeal.
The artist, however, left his fans intrigued with a cryptic acronym in his post. Encouraging fans to decipher the hidden meaning, he creates a buzz of anticipation around his next move. Whether this coded message signals a new music release, a political statement, or something else remains to be seen.
This saga marks a tumultuous chapter in the career of Seun Kuti, who has persistently pushed the boundaries of Afrobeat music, much like his legendary father, Fela Kuti. Despite the controversy, the artist’s release has been welcomed by his fans, who eagerly anticipate his return to the music scene.
