Seun Kuti’s Spain Concert In Jeopardy After Arrest As Star Remains In Custody

Seun Kuti’s story doesn’t appear to be ending anytime soon because the Nigerian Police seem determined to see that he is brought to justice, even if it means depriving him of his passion for performing music. According to social media reports, the Afrobeat musician was scheduled to perform on May 20, 2023, in Majorca, Spain.

This appears to be on hold, though, as the musician is still being held in police custody for an additional four days after a request for a delay to allow for more time for an “investigation.” On Saturday, May 13, 2023, on the Third Mainland Bridge, an armed police officer was assaulted by Kuti. His arrest was called for, and Kuti turned himself in and was taken into custody.

The musician is seen repeatedly shouting at the police in the viral footage before striking him in the face. Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, issued a statement shortly after the video appeared on social media ordering the musician’s arrest. The statement read,

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR, has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform. “The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly,”

He was later charged with violating Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act for allegedly assaulting a police officer. It is believed that The police will hold Kuti in custody until May 23, 2023, which jeopardizes further plans for his show.
