Due to her Oscars 2023 clothing choice, the brilliant Singer and Songwriter has been facing harsh criticism. Tems made news despite looking stunning in a LEVER COUTURE gown, as her net headpiece made it difficult for other guests to see the stage.
Netizens flocked to Twitter to criticize Tems severely for being “arrogant and self-centered,” Tems has now explained why she chose the garment in an interview with Harpers Bazaar. In her defense, She said it was her first Oscars, which made her want to stand out. She admitted that she would have objected to donning the gown two years prior but was prepared to go all out for her first Academy Awards.
According to her;
“Two years ago, I would’ve said no to this dress, But it’s my first Oscars — I am going to go all out. I really wanted to make the most of the day. The dress is also my way of celebrating my work and the people around me, celebrating my country, and celebrating the people that are rooting for me. This dress says ‘Yes, yes, I am here!‘”.
Tems became the first and only Nigerian Artist to be nominated for an Oscar. But, unfortunately, the Nigerian Singer and Afrobeat Queen’s “Lift Me Up” lost her ‘Best Original Song’ category nomination to Bollywood’s “Naatu Naatu” by Indian Songwriter and composers M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose. But she has remained defiant and unfazed by the defeat and backlash, as it also adds experience to her history-making journey.
