Wizkid Is The First African Artiste To Have An Album Certified RIAA Gold

Nigerian Afrobeats king Wizkid makes history as the first African artist to have an album certified RIAA Gold.

Almost two years later and Wizkid’s “Made In Lagos” album is still making history. Now, that’s how you make an album. The Nigerian star has become the first African artist to have an album certified Gold by the RIAA.

That’s a huge feat, and we are all proud of him. Machala’s “Made In Lagos” album snagged a Grammy Nomination this year but lost to Angelique Kidjo. The world could not stop talking about that. The album is still buzzing. It has also become the longest-charting African album on the Billboard World Albums chart. It expanded 94 weeks this week.

“Made In Lagos” features contributions from Grammy Award winner Burna Boy, Skepta, H.E.R., Ella Mai, Tay Iwar, Projexx, Tems, Damian Marley, and Starboy Entertainment artist Terri. It was produced by P2J, who did an incredible job.

The album spawned the number 9 peaking Hot 100 song “Essence,” featuring Tems and Justin Bieber, which dominated American radio until everyone was singing along. The song has been certified two times platinum by the RIAA. “Made In Lagos” was released via Starboy Entertainment and RCA Records. Wizkid is now credited for having both the best-selling African song and album in the US.
