Yaba Court Issues Order To Nigerian Police For Seun Kuti’s Release

Seun Kuti, the assaulter of a Nigerian police officer and son of Afrobeat musician Fela Kuti, has been granted bail. The Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos State, granted the musician bail on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. However, a witness reportedly told Sahara Reporters that the court’s judgment also mandates that the Nigerian police wrap up their inquiry into the alleged assault of a police officer within 48 hours and permit Kuti to return home.

Additionally, the Chief Magistrate requested that the police stop pursuing charges against him. She gave the order to duplicate the case file and send it to the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions for prosecution. The assaulted policeman, according to the police prosecutors, was allegedly in a coma and receiving treatment at an unidentified hospital, SaharaReporters had previously reported.

On Monday, Kuti was taken into custody after turning himself into the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja with the assistance of his attorney and a member of his family. It was reported on the same Monday night that Seun Kuti was denied bail by the police at the Lagos State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, following a fruitless attempt to coerce him into making a statement that would implicate him in the case of an alleged assault on a police officer.
