Adegboyega Oyetola Biography
Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola, known to many out there simply as Gboyega Oyetola, is a Nigerian politician, administrator, and ninth governor of Osun state. He was born in Iragbiji but never contested a political position until he was vyed for governor, supported by Tinubu, and “won.”
The son of an Islamic cleric, Oyetola has held several positions in insurance and other corporate universes before settling down in the world of politics. For instance, he had previously served as manager atLeadway Assurance and then as technical controller at Alliance and General Insurance Company Limited.
He was previously an executive vice chairman of Paragon Group of Companies, from whence he would launch his own company, Silvertrust Insurance Brokers Limited.
Around that time, of course, he was already politically active and was on the ground when the Alliance for Democracy (AD) transformed into Action Congress (AC) and then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN,) ultimately merging with another party, which Buhari controlled then, to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).
On the platform of the APC, Oyetola had contested the governorship election of Oyo state, supported by the party’s “national leader,” Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Records indicate he lost the election but was foisted on the people anyway.
They corrected that error efficiently when he sought a second term in 2022. He was humiliated at the pools and the people of Osun jubilated when it was announced he had lost the election.
In Nigeria, politics is the easiest path to easy money. It is therefore not surprising that many are willing to do anything and everything to get to power. Anyway, Oyetola made quite a bag as governor of Osun state. Still, his exact net worth is debatable.
The man himself wouldn’t be caught dead talking about that. But the public has been doing the talking. Estimates of his net worth range from $1.5 million to $3 million.
The net worth appears underestimated when one factor in the fact that he had spent over 11 million pounds on a London property, as exposed by the Pandora Papers.
He could easily have supported a large family, but the 9th governor of Osun state choose to keep the numbers moderate. He has just one wife and four children, making a six-member family. Of that collective, he is easily the most famous – not surprising given that he was Osun state’s former number one citizen.
As a Muslim, the former governor is entitled to at least four wives. However, he is on record to have only one wife – at the time of writing, anyway.
Kafayat Oyyola, born in 1960, is the only known wife of the former governor of Osun state. She is a philanthropist and the brains behind Ilerioluwa Development Initiative, an outfit with the aim to support underprivileged women and children in Nigeria.
Former Governor Oyetola is on record to have four children, who have mostly stayed out of the limelight. He is the one most in the limelight compared to his children with whom he is said to have a close relationship.
Oyetola was born into a devout Muslim. His mother was a woman known as Alhaja Wulemat Oyetola. She is now deceased. However, his father is still alive, by publicly available records, and serves as imam of their hometown Iragbiji. Unlike his son, Alhaji Hammed Oyetola is mostly out of the limelight.
While his tenure as governor of Osun state lasted, he was holed up in government house. He had to vacate the edifice when he was trounced at the pools. He is now somewhere in his official residence, details of which are scanty.
Anyway, he is known to have several and not just one house. For instance, the recently leaked Pandora Papers indicate that he had bought a mansion in London from Zavlil Holdings Ltd, a shell company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands and belonging to Kola Aluko, a Nigerian businessman facing money laundering charges.
It is always hard to differentiate between an official car and a personal car for the Nigerian. Most end up converting government vehicles to personal use when they leave office. That’s exactly the case with the former governor of Osun state.
It’s unclear what makes his personal car is before he became governor of Osun state in 2018. However, it is public knowledge that he converted his official car (paid for with government revenue) into personal use. His party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) confirmed the conversion of the official car to private use.
Incidentally, he wasn’t the only one who converted government vehicles to personal use. His deputy and several other officials in his government did the same.
Adegboyega Oyetola belongs to the current ruling party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress, a collective Nigerians now imprecate at random because, as far as they are concerned, nothing has changed except for the worse.
