Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua was born to Yeta and Robert Joshua on 15 October 1989 in Watford, Hertfordshire. His father is of Irish and Nigerian origin, and his mother is from Nigeria.
Joshua attended Mayflower School in Ikenne during his formative years in Nigeria. He returned to the UK halfway through Year Seven to enroll at Kings Langley Secondary School when his parents divorced when he was 12. His middle name, Oluwafemi, led to him being called “Femi” by his friends and former teachers when growing up on the Meriden Estate in Garston, Hertfordshire. He stood out in football and sports, breaking the school record for the Year Nine 100-meter dash in 11.6 seconds.

Football was Joshua’s first sport, and he didn’t turn to box until he was in his late teens. However, he excelled in football and athletics as a child. He also showed much promise as a sprinter, running the 100 meters in 11.6 seconds, breaking the previous mark in his school.

Amir Khan, a former world champion in light welterweight boxing, accused Joshua of having an affair with his ex-wife Farval Makhdoom in 2017. Joshua denied the assertion and insisted that he had never spoken to Farval. In addition, Joshua called Eddie Chambers, a heavyweight boxer, a “disgrace to the superior black race” in 2017. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn claimed the message was received from a fake account, but Chambers demonstrated that it had been sent from Joshua’s verified account, refuting Hearn’s false claim.
Afterward, Joshua appeared to back former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe on Snapchat. Yet his promoter asserted that his account had been hacked. In addition, Joshua was charged with racism in 2020 after saying, “Show them where it hurts, abstain from spending your money in their stores and economies, and invest in black-owned businesses,” at a Black Lives Matter rally in Watford.
