Babajide Sanwo-Olu Biography
His Excellency Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (born 25 June 1968) is the current Governor of Lagos State in Nigeria. He was born in Lagos State, Nigeria.
Sanwo-Olu graduated from the University of Lagos with a BSc in Surveying and an MBA. He attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government, London Business School, and Lagos Business School. He is a fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Training and Development(NITAD) and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM).
He was elected Governor on the platform of the All Progressives Congress after contesting and unexpectedly winning the All Progressives Congress gubernatorial primaries against incumbent Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in October 2019. He holds degrees from the University of Lagos, the London Business School, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Before running for Governor, he was the managing director and CEO of the Lagos State Property Development Corporation (LSPDC)

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was the treasurer at the erstwhile Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997, following which he became the head of the foreign money market at the United Bank for Africa. After that, he became a deputy general manager and divisional director for First Inland Bank, Plc (now First City Monument Bank). In addition, he was the chairman of Baywatch Group Limited and First Class Group Limited.
Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu began his political career in 2003 when he was appointed Special Advisor on Business Affairs to Femi Pedro, the then-Deputy Governor of Lagos State. He served as the interim Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget until 2007, when he was appointed Commissioner for Trade and Industry by then-Governor Bola Tinubu. Following the 2007 General Elections, Governor Babatunde Fashola named Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Commissioner for Establishments, Training, and Pensions. In 2016, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode appointed Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu as Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Company (LSDPC).
He publicly stated his desire to run for Lagos State governor on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform on 16 September 2018, making him a significant competitor to incumbent governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
His declaration was supported by major stakeholders in Lagos State politics, including the Governor’s Advisory Council of the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress and members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, prompting Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress APC in Lagos, to withdraw from the gubernatorial race.
On 2 October 2018, he won Lagos’s All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary. At the APC flag-off campaign rally on 8 January 2019, Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and 63 others endorsed Mr. Babajide Sanwo-candidacy. As a result, Olu’s Sanwo-Olu was elected Governor of Lagos State by a landslide victory over his opponent, Jimi Agbaje, in the 2019 Lagos State General Elections held on 9 March 2019. On Wednesday, 29 May 2019, he was sworn in as the 15th Governor of Lagos State at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on Lagos Island.
He has been involved in several development efforts, including road reconstruction in essential parts of Lagos state. Sanwo-Olu recently requested that the Fela Kuti statue erected by Akinwunmi Ambode be removed from Allen Avenue in Ikeja to alleviate traffic congestion. The figure, however, is reported to have been relocated to a more convenient location in Lagos state. In 2020, the Governor inaugurated the Oshodi – Abule-Egba BRT Lane, among other projects.
His noteworthy public-sector accomplishments include overseeing privatization efforts for the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE). In addition, he founded and served as the Pioneer Board Chairman of the Lagos Security Trust Fund. Under his orders, the LAGBUS System and the Control & Command Centre in Alausa Ikeja were constructed.
