Garba Shehu Biography

Mallam Garba Shehu is a Nigerian journalist and politician and current Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to President Buhari. He was born in the Jigawa state capital to parents who were originally from Kano.

Shehu started his media career as a correspondent with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Sokoto and later snagged a role as a correspondent with the Network News Lagos.

In the intervening years, he had held several other positions, including editor of the Daily Triumph and later editor-in-Chief of Triumph Publishing Company Limited, Kano. He was appointed a special adviser by President Buhari in 2015 and was reappointed into the role when the president won a second term in office.


The focus is rarely on his person but on what he says and does for his principal, President Buhari. However, Garba Shehu is said to have a pretty simple lifestyle, which in no way erases the reality of him being a rich man.

Garba Shehu lives in Abuja like most key aides to President Buhari. However, there is no clue what the house he lives in looks like. One can only assume it is befitting of a man of his status.


Cars are symbolic, for not only are they means of transport, but they can also give clues about their owners as well. Garba Shehu is in a position to afford some of the best cars out there. However, it is unclear what the makes of his cars are and how many vehicles he possesses.


Garba Shehu has a small family comprising six members – himself and his wife Hafsat. The other members are their four children: Three daughters and a son.


Garba Shehu has been long off the singles table. He got married to Hafsat back in 1986 and the two have been together since. Interestingly, unlike the presidential spokesperson, Hafsat appears content to stay firmly away from the limelight and controversies.


Garba Shehu is a family man with four kids. He had gotten married at the age of 27 and the kids followed soon after. He is on record to be the father of three daughters and a son – all from the same mother, Hasfat. Unlike their father, though, the children are rarely in the news.

Garba Shehu is one of the examples that one can rise from the bottom to the top. His parents weren’t exactly rich but he managed to push to the top anyway. His father was a driver known as Shehu Kofar Mata, and his mother was a sugar trader known as Jummai. both parents were originally from Kano.


It’s unclear who Garba Shehu’s siblings are – assuming he has any. The former journalist has been more focused on selling president Buhari than anything else, and not much is known about the other children his parents might have had

Political Appointment

Garba Shehu is a known loyalist of President Muhammadu Buhari. The president rewarded that loyalty by appointing him as Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity in 2015, just after defeating Goodluck Jonathan at the polls.

On his first appointment, he stood out for defending whatever position President Buhari took, despite their not being acceptable to the majority of the people. Not surprisingly, he was reappointed after president Buhari won a second term in office.
