Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio CON is a Nigerian lawyer and politician. He served as minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022 when he resigned on 11 May 2022 on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to contest in the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress. Akpabio served two terms as governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015.

Godswill Akpabio was born into the family of Chief Obot Akpabio and Madam Lucy Obot Akpabio (née Inyangetor) of Ukana, Ikot Ntuen in Essien Udim Local Government Area on December 9, 1962.

His grandfather, Okuku Udo Akpabio, was the Warrant Chief in Ikot Ekpene province. Akpabio’s uncle, Dr. I. U. Akpabio, was the Minister of Education/Internal Affairs in then-Eastern Nigeria, and his cousin Justice Nsima Akpabio was a senator in the Second Nigerian Republic.

Akpabio worked briefly as a teacher and as an associate partner with Paul Usoro and Co., a law firm in Nigeria.

Political Profile

Akpabio was appointed Honourable Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources by Governor Obong Victor Attah in Akwa Ibom State 2002. He served as a commissioner in Petroleum and Natural Resources, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Lands and Housing.

He was elected governor of Akwa Ibom State (PDP) in 2007 after receiving mass support. He was re-elected for a second term in 2011. He was also elected Chairman of the newly formed PDP Governors Forum in 2013. After defecting to the All Progressives Congress in 2018, he announced his resignation. Nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari and screened by the Nigerian Senate for a Ministerial appointment, Akpabio was sworn in as Minister for Niger Delta Affairs on 21 August 2019.

He resigned in 2022 to contest in the presidential primaries of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He later stepped down on the night of the primaries for Bola Tinubu. A few days later, he emerged as the Senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District amid foul play accusations. He later won the elections.
