Iyorchia Ayu Biography
Iyorchia Ayu, a politician from Nigeria who was born on November 15, 1952, is the current leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee. He was a former senator from Nigeria who was chosen to lead the Senate during the Third Republic of Nigeria (1992–1993). Later, between 1999 and 2007, he held several ministerial roles in President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Cabinet.
Ayu was born in the Benue State town of Gboko. He was the head of the Jos University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. He taught sociology at the University of Jos in Plateau State and taught classes on the art and science of Marxism (ASUU). After entering politics, he gained popularity among most Tiv people in his home state of Benue.

Political Career
Under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform, he won the Third Republic’s Senate election, rising to the position of Senate President. Ayu, a fierce opponent of the Interim National Government set up after the elected president Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola had been prevented from assuming office, was impeached by the Senate in November 1993. He did, however, later advance to the position of Minister of Education under General Sani Abacha’s military regime. He presided over a symposium on technical education in Nigeria in March 1994 to learn from Germany, the US, the UK, and Japan.
