Kashim Shettima Biography

Kashim Shettima Mustapha GCON is a Nigerian politician and former banker. Since May 2023, Shettima has been the 15th and current vice president of Nigeria. From 2019 to 2023, he previously served as senator for Borno Central, and from 2011 to 2019, he served as the governor of Borno State.

Political History

Kashim Shettima was appointed as a commissioner for Finance in Borno State under the cabinet of Governor Modu Sheriff in 2007. He served for four years in the cabinet and, in 2011, was elected governor. He reportedly became an “accidental governor” after the assassination of Modu Fannami Gubio of the All Nigeria People’s Party in January 2011. He was elected as the ANPP candidate when a second primary was conducted. He went on to become governor.

He was re-elected by a wider margin in 2015 to serve a second term. His term in office was plagued by the deadly Boko Haram insurgency, which constantly dominated the news.

After his second term as Governor of Borno State in 2019, Kashim Shettima ran for Senate and won. He won the Borno Central Senatorial District elections to replace Babakaka Bashir at the National Assembly.

He was renominated for Senate in 2023, but he withdrew from the nomination to become Bola Tinubu’s running mate. He was replaced by Kaka-Shehu Lawan as the senate nominee. Kashim Shettima is married to Nana Kashim Shettima. She is the second lady of Nigeria since May 2023, as the wife of the Vice President. Nana Kashim Shettima was the first lady of Borno State from 2011 to 2019. She is the CEO of the SWOT Foundation and Model Orphanage Integrated School, Maiduguri.

She was born Nana Usman Alkali was born in 1975 in Kano State to the family of Alhaji Usman Alkali, who hails from Borno State. She is a Kanuri by tribe. She attended the University of Maiduguri, where she studied English Language and Literature. She married Kashim Shettima in 1998. With the support of her husband, she has done numerous humanitarian and social activities in support of orphans and widows. Growing up, Kashim Shettima attended Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. From 1978 to 1980, he attended Government Community Secondary School, Biu. He graduated from Government Science Secondary School in 1983.

He is an alumnus of the University of Maiduguri, where he graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1989. He obtained a Master’s in Agricultural Economics at the University of Ibadan in 1991. He did his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the defunct Nigeria Agricultural Cooperative Bank, Calabar, Cross River (1989-1990).
