The son of elementary school caretaker Bernard “Barney” Neeson and cook Katherine “Kitty” Neeson (née Brown), Liam Neeson was born in Ballymena, County Antrim. He was named Liam after a local priest and was brought up Catholic. From 1963 to 1967, he was a student at St. Patrick’s College in Ballymena, where he subsequently claimed that his passion for theatre first took root.

He claimed that his upbringing as a Catholic in a town with a large Protestant population made him wary. He once claimed that despite never being treated like an “inferior or even different” person at the town’s primarily Protestant technical institution, he felt like a “second-class citizen” there. Neeson was naturalized as an American citizen in 2009. He also holds citizenship in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His primary ethnicity is Irish.
