In a polygamous household with sixteen children, Omoyele Sowore was born on February 16, 1971, in the Niger Delta of Nigeria; he is originally from Ese Odo, Ondo State.

To feed his entire family every morning before heading to school, he learned to ride a motorcycle when he was 12. In addition, Sowore’s passion and desire for the media during Nigeria’s military regime were fueled.

Omoyele Sowore started his official education while he was very young. He first attended a primary elementary school, then moved on to Community High School in Kiribo, Ondo State, and finally, Ofedepe Comprehensive High School in Okitipupa, Ondo State, for his WAEC. Between 1989 and 1995, Sowore completed his undergraduate studies in geography and planning at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

He started his political and activism career while still an undergraduate and was expelled twice before earning his degree. Columbia University awarded Him a master’s degree in public administration.

Omoyele Sowore’s wife is Opeyemi Oluwole, a Nigerian American. They got married in 2004.

She first gained attention from the public after she campaigned for Omoyele Sowore’s release when the journalist was re-arrested by the Department of State Services on December 6 on suspicion of treason, a felony, cyber stalking, and money laundering after being initially detained on August 3, 2019.

He participated in student protests in 1989 over the terms of a $120 million loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for an oil pipeline in Nigeria. A reduction of Nigeria’s 28 universities to 5 was one of the terms of the IMF loan.

In a 1992 demonstration against the Nigerian government, Sowore was in charge of 5,100 students. Police opened fire during the rally, killing seven demonstrators. Sowore was taken into custody and mistreated. Omoyele was also part of the call for a democratic administration to replace military rule on June 12, 1993. Several people were arrested, detained, and received life-threatening treatment from government agents.

Claims that he was a cultist surfaced during his tenure as SUG President in Unilag, making him a target for opponents in other cults.

In 1999, He was poisoned and injected with a substance called “Lead” during an attack that resulted in them ultimately catching up with him. He was transported to America for necessary medical care, and he recovered.
Sowore was also charged with soliciting payments from President Buhari during the 2014 election to discredit former President Goodluck Jonathan.
It has been claimed that he utilized his media company, Sahara Reporter, to extort government officials out of selfish motives.

Nearly every politician in Nigeria with whom Sowore has a difference of opinion has threatened his life or brought legal action against him in other instances.

His political rivals are numerous. Senator Dino Melaye, Bukola Saraki, and Ted Ikuru are just a few politicians on his extensive list of adversaries.
On August 3, 2019, he was detained by the DSS. Sowore had called for a nationwide protest called #RevolutionNow. After denying the dentist, the Nigerian Federal Government acknowledged making the arrest.

Renowned activists and campaigners like Wole Soyinka and Oby Ezekwesili criticized the detention of Sowore. Sowore was accused of “conspiracy to commit treason and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.”

The DSS first resisted releasing Sowore, stating they were unaware of the court order. After the DSS refused to release Sowore, protests were organized at the UN plaza Swore’se’s wife. Many people who supported Sowore viewed the arrest of Sowore as a failure of Nigerian Democracy, leading to a global outcry.

Sowore declared his intention to run for president in the 2019 general elections in Nigeria on February 25, 2018. He established the African Action Congress (AAC) in August 2018, and under its platform, he planned to run for president in 2019.

Sowore was announced as the party’s presidential candidate on October 6, 2018, but ultimately lost.

In the 2019 presidential election, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won with 15,191,847 votes, and Sowore finished fifth with 33,953 votes.
