Actor Chief Pete Edochie, MON, was born in Nigeria on March 7, 1947. Edochie is regarded as one of Africa’s most outstanding actors and has received awards from the Africa Film Academy for Lifetime Achievement and the Industry Merit Award from Africa Magic. Even though he was an experienced administrator and broadcaster, he first gained notoriety in the 1980s when he played Okonkwo, the main character, in a Nigerian Television Authority rendition of Things Fall Apart, the best-selling book by Chinua Achebe. Edochie is a Catholic and descended from the Igbo people of Nigeria. President Olusegun Obasanjo gave him the title Member of the Order of the Niger in 2003.
