Mahmood Yakubu, a Nigerian academic and the current Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, was born in 1962. (INEC). President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Mahmood to the position on October 21, 2015, following Amina Zakari, acting chairperson. Mahmood Yakubu was born in Bauchi, Nigeria’s northernmost state. He finished elementary and secondary school at Kobi Primary School and Government Teachers College in Toro, respectively. He then went to the University of Sokoto (now Usmanu Danfodiyo University), where he became the first and only Northern Nigerian to receive a first-class degree certificate in history.

Career

Mahmood Yakubu started his academic career in 1986 as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Jos, where he later completed his postgraduate studies. He began working as a Lecturer I upon his return to Nigeria in 1992. He relocated to the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna in 1993 and worked there until 1995, rising from Senior Lecturer to Reader. Between 1994 to 1995, he was the department’s head. He was appointed a professor in 1998, and from that year until 2000, he held the positions of Director of Academic Planning and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Before serving as the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ second Dean from 2002 to 2004, he served as a member of the Armed Forces Selection Board from 1998 to 2003. He began serving as the Chairman of the Staff School’s Management Board in 2004, a post he held until 2006. In addition, he served as the first Dean of the Post Graduate School from 2004 to 2006. The Education Trust Fund (ETF), which later changed its name to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), chose Professor Mahmood Yakubu as its executive secretary in 2007.

An honorary fellowship from the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations was given to him in 2013. At the 2014 National Conference, he held the position of Assistant Secretary of Finance and Administration. He was named Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on October 21, 2015, and he still maintains that position as of this writing. He took over as chairperson in place of Amina Zakari.

Qualifications

Prof. Mahmood won the Commonwealth Scholarship from the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Overseas Research Scholarship three times. He has Honoris Causa doctorates in Law from Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto and Letters from Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma and Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki. He is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and the Historical Society of Nigeria.

Education

He attended Kobi Primary School for his elementary education. He enrolled in the Government Teachers College, Toro, after receiving his First School Leaving Certificate for his secondary schooling and graduated in 1980 with a Grade II Teachers’ Certificate. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Sokoto (now Usmanu Danfodiyo University) in the same year. He was a Federal Government Merit Award scholar from 1983 to 1985. He earned a first-class honors degree in history in 1985, was awarded the Waziri of Sokoto Prize for the Best Graduating Student, and broke a long-standing record by becoming the first student from Northern Nigeria to do so.

Mahmood enrolled at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholarship after completing his required one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) service, where he worked as an academic assistant in the Department of History, University of Jos, and earned a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree in International Relations in 1987. He began his doctoral studies at the University of Oxford that same year with the help of a Commonwealth Scholarship. In 1991, at 29, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil) in history.

INEC Appointment

President Muhammadu Buhari selected Professor Mahmood Yakubu to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission in 2015. (INEC). Along with five new commissioners representing each of the country’s five geopolitical zones, Yakubu replaced Amina Zakari, the acting chairperson. President Muhammadu Buhari selected Mahmood Yakubu to chair the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2015. He handled the general elections in 2019 and the elections for governor in Ekiti, Anambra, Osun, and Edo. President Buhari chose him to retake office in 2020.
