Career

For the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Somachi Chris-Asoluka is in charge of policy and external relations. In addition, she leads the Foundation’s advocacy programs, which include case studies, seminars, roundtables, and symposiums, as well as the data collection, analysis, and technique evaluation for all research publications of the Foundation. For the Foundation and its Founder, Mr. Tony Elumelu CON, she also oversees all ties and engagements with the outside world.

In accordance with a statement, Somachi, who joined the Foundation in 2014, had previously held the positions of director of partnerships and communications, head of research, head of policy, and head of external relations. Somachi would use her knowledge, experience, and network in her new position as CEO to give strategic leadership in consolidating and intensifying the Foundation’s work of transforming Africa through entrepreneurship.

Following the retirement of the incumbent CEO, Ifeyinwa Ugochukwu, the Board of Trustees of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), one of the top philanthropies promoting young African entrepreneurs from all 54 African countries, has announced the nomination of Somachi Chris-Asoluka as CEO. The appointment will be in place starting on March 1, 2023. Since the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme was introduced in 2015, the Foundation has trained more than 1.5 million young Africans on its digital hub, TEFConnect, and given out nearly $100 million in direct funding to 18,000 African women and men, who have collectively produced over 400,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Before working for the Foundation, Somachi was employed by Phillips Consulting Limited’s Corporate Governance and Finance section. In 2013, she also worked as a research assistant at the Lagos Business School and interned as a columnist for the BusinessDay newspaper. She is a fellow of the Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa, a program annually recognizing and engaging the top 25 most potential young women leaders on the continent. She is also a member of the Financial Women’s Association in San Francisco, the Omicron Delta Epsilon (National Economics Honor Society) in the United States, and the Financial Women’s Association in San Francisco.

Education & Awards

In addition to receiving the “Adam Smith” award granted to the top Economics student, Somachi graduated from Saint Mary’s College of California with honors. Additionally, she holds a Yale University Master’s degree in International and Development Economics.
