Cordae Biography

Cordae Amari Dunston, known as Cordae (formerly YBN Cordae and Entendre), is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. He gained popularity by releasing remixes of popular songs, including “My Name Is” by Eminem and “Old Niggas”, a response to the song “1985” by J. Cole. He uploaded videos of both remixes to WorldStarHipHop’s YouTube channel, leading to a massive and immediate positive response from the online rap community and the media.

Cordae’s debut album, “The Lost Boy,” was released in 2019. It received wide acclaim. It also received two nominations for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song for the single “Bad Idea” at the 62nd Grammy Awards. From 2018, he was a member of the YBN collective until 2019, when he quit the group. He dropped the “YBN” from his stage name after leaving the group.

Cordae and his family lived in North Carolina, where he was born, and moved to Prince George’s County, Maryland, where he grew up.


Cordae has not shared much information about his parents. He only said they lived in North Carolina before they moved.


Cordae has credited his father for inspiring his love for music. According to him, while he was growing up, his father played classic hip-hop artists such as Rakim, Nas, Big L, and Talib Kweli, which inspired him to want to make music.

Cordae shares a close bond with his brother Simba, a rapper who he added fragments of his voice to his album. Simba was arrested and charged with armed robbery and sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Cordae’s album starts with “Shiloh’s Intro,” where Simba freestyles over the phone from prison. In N interview with, Cordae said, “Well, for one, that’s my brother Shiloh. He’s in prison right now, serving a 24-year sentence. He used to rap, and we used to rap all the time together, and I felt like it was necessary, but also dope from the creative side, to include him on the intro for the album to shed some light on him and his situation.”

“It also kind of put the pieces [of the album] together because he’s seeing things from a bird’s eye view perspective — more so from a caged bird’s perspective, if you would. I think it starts [the album] off beautifully,” he said.


It is unknown if Cordae has sisters.


Cordae is expecting his first child, a girl with girlfriend, Tennis champion Naomi Osaka.


Cordae is in a relationship with Tennis star Naomi Osaka. The couple has been romantically linked since 2019. On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Naomi announced via social media that she was pregnant with the couple’s first child. She shared a sonogram photo and attached the caption, “Can’t wait to get back on the court, but here’s a little life update for 2023.” The couple is expecting a baby girl.

Cordae told GQ UK in 2022, “I became who I am in Maryland. You just can’t be in Maryland and be lame. You gotta be cool, you gotta be fly, you gotta be yourself. Like, it’s just the reality.
