Oluseun Anikulapo Kuti, professionally known as Seun Kuti, is a Nigerian singer and musician. He is best recognized as the youngest son of the famous Afrobeats pioneer Fela Kuti. He also fronts his father’s former band, Egypt 80.
At age five, Seun became interested in music. By the time he turned 9, he had started playing with his father, Fela Kuti’s band Egypt 80. He took on the role of leading the band after his father’s death in 1997. They released the album “Many Things” in 2008. It was the first album they released under the moniker Seun Kuti & Egypt 80. Seun featured in Calle 13’s song “Todo se mueve” (Everything Moves) on their 2010 album “Entren los que quieran.” In 2014, he was given an honorary invitation to perform Live for the first time at the Industry Nite.
In 2019, American rapper Jidenna featured as a guest on his second studio album, “85 To Africa.” Kuti is also featured in the Visual Collaborative electronic catalog under the Polaris series. He was interviewed on Pan-African awareness, his country, and music.
Seun Kuti is the youngest son in the Kuti family. The family is famous for their legendary father, who was an activist, an iconic musician, and the pioneer of Afrobeat music. A number of them are involved in the music industry.
Seun Kuti was the youngest son of his parents.
Seun Kuti’s father is the late iconic musician and activist Fela Kuti. Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti (born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti), also known as Abami Eda, was an iconic Nigerian musician, bandleader, composer, political activist, and Pan-Africanist. Kuti is regarded as the pioneer of Afrobeat (a Nigerian music genre that combines West African music with American funk and jazz.) Fela was referred to as one of Africa’s most “challenging and charismatic music performers.” He was described by AllMusic as a musical and sociopolitical voice of international significance. Fela fronted the band Egypt 80 and was succeeded by his son as the band’s leader after his death.
Seun Kuti’s mother, Fehintola Anikulapo Kuti, was one of Fela Kuti’s wives. In an interview with Moet and Nicole Abebe, Seun revealed that his mother used to hide with him in his room to smoke weed. He said, “My mum was smoking till she had me. Even when I started smoking, we used to smoke together. And the funniest times were when her mom comes to stay with us, and she didn’t know her daughter smokes.
So my mum has to run to my room to hide and smoke weed with me. So we were both smoking in my room, hiding from her mom. So I’d tell her go deal with your mum, my mum knows I smoke. My grandma is old school, so my mum couldn’t tell her.”
Seun Kuti comes from an extended family. He has siblings and step-siblings. Like him, some of his siblings began their musical careers as members of their father’s band, Egypt 80.
Seun Kuti’s brothers include Femi Kuti and Kunle Kuti. Femi is a Grammy-nominated musician, while Kunle is the manager of the Kalakuta museum.

Seun Kuti and his wife, Yetunde, have a daughter named Adara Kuti. Adara turned eight in 2022, and her father celebrated her on social.
Seun Kuti is married to Yetunde Kuti. The couple celebrated their first anniversary on Yetunde’s birthday in 2021. Seun wrote, “It’s been one year we made it official. It’s also your birthday. It’s cause for celebration , double celebration. I am happy we celebrate your life and our love on the same day, wouldn’t have it any other way. Loving you and celebrating you has and will always be my honor, Mrs Anikulapo- Kuti.”
