Background

Steve was brought up entirely by his mother after being born in Compton to an African-American mother and a Filipino father. Steve has stated in interviews that he never had a close relationship with his father, who died when he was just ten years old. Early on, Steve developed a passion for the guitar and began teaching himself how to play after becoming enamored with the computer game Guitar Hero.

On all of his recordings, he plays guitar as the main instrument, although he is also a multi-instrumentalist. Steve is also skilled with bass, vocals, keyboards, and drums. Like his sisters, Lacy spent the most of his formative years attending private school. As much as possible, the Lacy children were shielded from the negative aspects of Compton by their mother. Lacy joined his high school jazz band while he was a teenager, when he met Jameel Bruner. Bruner and Lacy eventually joined the musical group, The Internet.
