Usher Biography
Usher Raymond IV was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 14, 1978. His parents were Tennessee residents Jonetta Patton and Usher Raymond III. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, he spent the majority of his formative years. When Usher was a year old, his father left the household. Usher was brought up by his mom, ex-stepdad, and half-brother James Lackey.
When he was nine, Usher joined the Chattanooga neighborhood church youth chorus led by his mother. But she didn’t believe he could sing professionally until he joined a group. Then, thinking that living in a bigger city would provide more opportunities for showcasing his talent, Usher’s family moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There, the environment was friendlier to emerging singers. He thus attended Atlanta’s North Springs High School.

His parents are Jonetta Patton and Usher Raymond III though he is frequently referred to be Ben Vereen’s godson. Usher’s father left the family when he was just a year old. He shared his upbringing with his mother, stepfather, and half-brother. After abandoning her full-time office job, Usher’s mother, whom the singer regards as his best friend, oversaw the young star’s career. Usher Raymond III, Usher’s father, died of a heart attack on January 21, 2008.

Kile Glover, Usher’s former stepson, and Foster’s 11-year-old son, was injured by a personal watercraft on Lake Lanier the day before and was pronounced brain dead on July 8, 2012. Glover passed away on July 21, 2012, after having his life support turned off. Usher V, Usher’s eldest son, was admitted to the ICU on August 5, 2013, just over a year after becoming trapped in a drain while swimming in a pool at his father’s house.
The following day, Foster requested an emergency custody hearing in Fulton County Superior Court, asking for temporary primary custody and using Usher V’s “near-death accident” as proof of a deficiency in child care. The lawsuit was thrown out at the hearing on August 9, 2013, and Usher was given exclusive custody of their two sons.
