CBN Urges Nigerians To Report PoS Agents Charging Excessively For Withdrawals

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has taken a bold step to address the issue of PoS agents selling new naira notes or charging above N200 for withdrawals up to N10,000. The bank has released emergency telephone numbers where Nigerians can report such agents, and advised members of the public to make use of them.

In a press briefing with journalists in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, the Director of the CBN Governor’s Department, Mr Joseph Omayuku, stated that the bank is committed to addressing the challenges faced by Nigerians in getting new naira notes.

The scarcity of the new naira notes has been a major issue, with many Nigerians finding it difficult to get their hands on them. This has led to some rejecting old notes as legal tender, while some state governors have resolved to sue the Federal Government for the challenges experienced in their respective states.

Despite the challenges, the CBN has assured Nigerians that it is doing all it can to ensure that new naira notes are readily available. This move to release emergency telephone numbers is one of the ways the bank is working to address the issue of illegal practices by PoS agents.

The CBN has urged Nigerians to report any PoS agent who sells new naira notes or charges above N200 for withdrawals up to N10,000. The bank has provided several channels for reporting such agents, including the CBN contact centre on 07002255226, telephone extension 711025-7, and contactcbn@cbn.gov.ng. The bank has also provided its social media handles for Nigerians to report erring agents.

While the redesign policy has caused hardship for Nigerians, there are still complaints of hitches in online payment platforms of banks leading to failed transactions. The CBN has, however, stated that the situation is not as bad as to warrant the rejection of transfer payments.

With this new development, Nigerians can now report erring PoS agents and help the CBN to combat the challenges of getting new naira notes. The bank has promised to investigate and take appropriate actions against any PoS agent found guilty of illegal practices. This move by the CBN is a step in the right direction, and Nigerians are hopeful that it will address the challenges they are facing with getting new naira notes.
