Chimamanda Adichie Responds To Soyinka’s Accusation Of Fascism And Explains Why

Novelist Chimamanda Adichie has refuted Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka’s assertions that Datti Baba-Ahmed, a vice presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), is acting in a fascist manner. In an interview, Soyinka charged Peter Obi’s fans, known as Obidients, with fascism for allegedly refusing to accept constructive criticism since it was their “badge of honor.”

Speaking on the Arise TV program Politics in Nigeria, Chimamanda disagreed with Soyinka, claiming that the word “fascist” is a very strong one. She claims that Datti and the Obidients cannot be described as fascists, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can.

Soyinka has claimed the words of Datti regarding the judiciary were inappropriate. Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, would be running an unlawful government, according to the LP vice-presidential nominee, because the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate “has not met requirements of the law.”

In an interview with Arise TV, Soyinka stated that Datti’s entire speech was unseemly, unacceptable, and dictating to the Supreme Court. Ultimately, Adichie disagreed with Soyinka’s labeling of Baba-Ahmed’s remarks as fascist and said it was appropriate for educated Nigerians to come to their own conclusions about how the constitution should be interpreted. For her boldness and brilliance in speaking up about the irregularities in Nigerian politics, Chimamanda deserves all the applause she can get.
