Legendary Togolese Footballer Emmanuel Adebayor Has Announced His Retirement
Emmanuel Adebayor confirmed his retirement with a video featuring his memorable goal for Manchester City against his old club, Arsenal. The 39-year-old Togolese striker was outstanding for the Gunners during his three and a half years there after moving from Monaco in 2006, netting 62 goals, winning the African Footballer of the Year award, and being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2008.
Yet many Arsenal supporters were disappointed by the move as he left the club in July 2009 to sign for Manchester City for £25 million, a team that had just been acquired by the Abu Dhabi United Group. To make matters worse, the clubs played in the Premier League two months later. Adebayor scored against his previous team in a 4-2 victory, and in front of the visiting Arsenal fans, he famously ran the length of the field to celebrate.
Projectiles, including a chair, were thrown from the away end. In addition to a three-match suspension for stamping on Robin van Persie, he received a suspended two-match suspension, a £25,000 fine, and these penalties for his actions. Adebayor apologized, claiming that “the emotion took over me,” but claimed that the Arsenal supporters had insulted him the whole game.
His Instagram retirement statement mentions the controversial header goal from the 80th minute and another Manchester City goal. The former Togo forward, who played 85 matches for his nation and scored 32 goals, completed his career with Semassi.
