With the appointment of the American rapper and producer Pharrell Williams as Louis Vuitton’s new creative director for Menswear on Tuesday, the already closely related businesses of fashion and entertainment come even closer.

About 16 months after the untimely death of its last menswear designer, Virgil Abloh, in 2021, the French luxury brand announced on Instagram that it had hired Mr. Williams. Mr. Williams, the company claimed in a statement, “is a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion — establishing himself as a global cultural icon.”

Since 2004, Mr. Williams, the first man to represent Chanel as an ambassador, has intermittently collaborated with Louis Vuitton. More recently, he began working with Tiffany & Company, a jeweler subsidiary of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy(LVMH), a luxury goods conglomerate.

Mr. Williams frequently wore his diamond-encrusted Tiffany & Company sunglasses at the Grammy Awards and the January menswear shows in Paris. During the Paris Men’s Fashion Week in June, he will debut his first collection for Louis Vuitton.

Pietro Beccari, who recently joined Louis Vuitton from Dior, and is now CEO, made the appointment of Pharrell his first significant move in the office.
