Naira Redesign: Datti Visits Obi Of Onitsha, Slams Buhari

Yusuf Datti, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate, attacked the Central Bank of Nigeria and President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) over the naira redesign on Thursday, calling the policy “poorly implemented” and displaying the President’s weakness.

Datti said during a courtesy visit to the Palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, on Thursday.

“Maybe this President is becoming a weakling, a lame duck president, and if you cede one inch, you are going to cede another inch,” he remarked (sic). It (the new naira) is here to stay, and it was poorly implemented, as is everything about this government and its policies, including our economy, security, and level of development.

Datti argued that the pendulum was swinging towards Obi’s victory since, among the leading presidential contenders, only the LP candidate has a clean record after leaving office as governor.

He stated that aside from Peter Obi being the most decent and qualified of his fellow candidates, 2023 is the turn of the Ndigbo and Christians to produce Nigeria’s next President.

He stated, “Your Majesty, I wish to inform you that we have gone through the records of all the past governors that have ruled various states in Nigeria, and we discovered that only my principal, Peter Obi, kept a clean record and left money in the government coffers while leaving office, which is why the anti-graft agencies have never invited him for any questioning.”

He said that Obi was the person Nigeria needed to unite the country and recover the country’s ailing economy.

In his answer, Achebe, the Chairman of the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers and the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, read short a communiqué issued by the South-East Traditional Rulers Council following its meeting on Wednesday in Enugu.

The monarch stated that the communiqué directed traditional rulers in Igboland to hold town hall meetings in their respective communities to educate their subjects on the importance of avoiding threats of an election boycott or, at worst, sitting at home and voting for candidates of their choice on election days.

Achebe urged security personnel in the country to provide enough safety for voters in an appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.
