Nasir el-Rufai Concerned About Low Voter Turnout Mars 2023 Nigerian Presidential Elections
The presidential elections in Nigeria in 2023 have been distinguished by a low voter participation, particularly among women. Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State voiced his worry about voter apathy and urged people to take their responsibilities seriously. He encouraged people to use their right to vote by pointing out that this is an opportunity to elect the leaders who will govern the nation and he highlighted that this is a chance for citizens to elect the leaders who will run the country.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured several notable wins despite the low attendance. One among these triumphs was Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu capturing Governor El-voting Rufai’s unit in Kaduna State. The nominee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, earned 134 votes, while Tinubu received 173 votes to win the election. Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) received 20 votes, much more than the three votes the Labour Party (LP) received.
Governor el-Rufai applauded the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) for the enhancements that were made to the electoral process. In particular, he praised the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which ensured that voting was conducted orderly and uncomplicated. He did, however, express alarm about claims of violence and electoral fraud, including stealing vote boxes and BVAS in certain polling units. This was one of the incidents that prompted his concern.
A rice mill was damaged in Southern Kaduna by men alleged to be political thugs, while in Soba, two voting boxes were stolen. Both incidents took place on election day. In spite of these events, the governor stated that the technology that was utilized in the elections has made it nearly difficult for anyone to participate in unsophisticated vote manipulation. He sent a plea to the authorities, requesting that they conduct a comprehensive investigation into the occurrences and guarantee that those responsible are brought to justice.
With these results pouring in, it is still too early to tell the outcome of the elections, but the APC’s successes at some polling units are an indicator that they are still popular among Nigerian voters. The low voter participation, on the other hand, may provide a problem for both parties as they strive to win this closely contested election.
