Abba Kabir Yusuf Biography
Abba Kabir Yusuf, born in Gaya Northern Region, Nigeria (now in Kano State) on 5th January 1963, is a Nigerian politician who has served as governor of Kano State since 2023. From 2011 to 2015, Yusuf served as a commissioner in the executive council of Kano State. He is the son-in-law of Nigerian politician and former Governor of Kano state (from 1999 to 2003) and (2011 to 2015), Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Abba Kabir Yusuf (born Abubakar, but nicknamed Abba, which became his official name) was born into the family of Malam Kabiru Yusuf and Malama Khadijatul-Naja’atu in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State, where he was raised. At an early age, Yusuf started his Islamic education under the guidance of his late grandfather, Danmakwayon Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Bashari, the then-District Head of Gaya local government area of Kano State, Nigeria.

Aftering winning the Kano Gubernatorial elections in 2023, Abba Gida-Gida said that his wives and children would not have a role in the governance of the state. He said he would not allow any of his family members to have an influence on the governance of the state during his administration because they did not take the oath of office with him.
“My wives will not be part of the governance. My children will not be part of the governance. And I can tell you for sure that this is the same for my deputy governor,” Abba said.

Political Career
Abba Kabir Yusuf was appointed personal assistant to Rabiu Kwankwaso while he was the governor of Kano State in 1999. In 2003, when Kwankwaso became a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he was retained as a personal assistant. He later became the Commissioner of Works, Housing and Transport in 2011, when Rabiu Kwankwaso became the governor of Kano State for a second term.
In 2018, Rabiu Kwankwaso appointed Abba Kabir Yusuf to challenge the incumbent Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 gubernatorial election because of their differences. However, in 2022, he moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Again, he was anointed by Kwankwaso to challenge Nasir Yusuf Gawuna in the 2023 Kano Gubernatorial elections, after which he emerged as the winner.
Abba Kabir Yusuf was elected governor of Kano State on 18 March 2023 under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party. He and his deputy Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo were sworn into office on 29 May 2023.
