Garba Shehu Biography

Mallam Garba Shehu is a Nigerian journalist and politician and current Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to President Buhari. He was born in the Jigawa state capital to parents who were originally from Kano.

Shehu started his media career as a correspondent with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Sokoto and later snagged a role as a correspondent with the Network News Lagos.

In the intervening years, he had held several other positions, including editor of the Daily Triumph and later editor-in-Chief of Triumph Publishing Company Limited, Kano. He was appointed a special adviser by President Buhari in 2015 and was reappointed into the role when the president won a second term in office.

The focus is rarely on his person but on what he says and does for his principal, President Buhari. However, Garba Shehu is said to have a pretty simple lifestyle, which in no way erases the reality of him being a rich man.

Garba Shehu is a known loyalist of President Muhammadu Buhari. The president rewarded that loyalty by appointing him as Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity in 2015, just after defeating Goodluck Jonathan at the polls.

On his first appointment, he stood out for defending whatever position President Buhari took, despite their not being acceptable to the majority of the people. Not surprisingly, he was reappointed after president Buhari won a second term in office.
