Young Thug’s Defense Wants To Have “Lyrics And Music Videos” Removed From Evidence; Cites Reason

Since it began, Young Thug’s RICO case has taken several fascinating detours, and the prosecution and defence have been pursuing it for a while. Lyrics were controversially ruled to be used as evidence by the judge in Young Thug’s YSL RICO trial last year. Rappers like Killer Mike opposed the judgment, which has reignited a significant discussion about whether lyrics should be permitted in court. Then, in an attempt to get those words and a few music videos excluded from the trial’s admissible evidence, Thug’s defence submitted a fresh motion. To strengthen the rapper’s case, they referenced a recent, unrelated Georgia Supreme Court ruling, which seems to support their claims that the rapper’s lyrics don’t reflect his warning to commit a crime.

The California Supreme Court reversed a 2019 murderer’s conviction earlier this week. A music video used as evidence was deemed “highly prejudicial,” leading them to overturn the sentence. In its decision, they stated that by depicting Baker as a menacing gunman, the state was able to present proof of his unlawful tendency and that the prosecutor had significantly increased the video’s biased effects by stressing that it demonstrated Baker’s propensity for gun violence. The court found that the footage unfairly influenced the jury’s perception of the defendant, denying him a fair trial. Thug’s defence hopes the ruling will help remove similar evidence from their trial.
