Young Thug’s YSL RICO Trial May See Lil Wayne Testify
The state of Georgia is currently prosecuting a high-profile case involving the famous rapper Young Thug, who stands accused of being part of a notorious criminal organization known as YSL, or Young Stoner Life. The trial began in November 2023 and has attracted significant public attention due to its connections with the music industry and the allegations of criminal activity against prominent rappers.
In one recent development, the Fulton County prosecutors sought to introduce clips of Lil Wayne, a well-known rapper, discussing Young Thug as evidence in the case. However, Judge Ural Glanville denied the request, stating that the clips could only be admitted if Lil Wayne testified in court. Since Lil Wayne was removed from the witness list last month, it seems unlikely that he will be called to testify, and the clips will not be admitted as evidence—or so the media has heard so far.
The clips reportedly show Lil Wayne in a heated argument with Young Thug before a 2015 shooting incident involving Lil Wayne’s tour bus. Chief Deputy District Attorney Adriane Love argued that the clips were relevant to the case. Still, Judge Glanville expressed scepticism about the state’s reluctance to call Lil Wayne as a witness, suggesting that the state may be trying to avoid doing so.
The trial has also been complicated by the reluctance of other potential witnesses associated with YSL, including Gunna, who took a plea deal in 2022 and has stated that he will not testify against his fellow YSL member. “I have not made any statements, have not been interviewed, have not cooperated, have not agreed to testify or be a witness for or against any party in the case, and have absolutely no intention of being involved in the trial process in any way,” he said at the time of his release from prison. Despite these obstacles, the trial is expected to continue as scheduled, with the state pursuing its case against Young Thug and other alleged members of YSL. The case has raised important questions about the intersection of the music industry and criminal activity and the challenges of prosecuting cases involving high-profile figures and reluctant witnesses.
