Erik Sven Gunnar Karlsson, a professional ice hockey defenseman with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL), was born in Sweden on May 31, 1990. Karlsson spent his first nine NHL seasons with the Ottawa Senators, who selected him in the first round, 15th overall, at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
He has previously played for the San Jose Sharks. Karlsson has won the James Norris Memorial Trophy three times, in 2012, 2015, and 2023, for being the best defenseman in the NHL. Karlsson was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, August 6, 2023, as part of a three-team trade that also included the Montreal Canadiens.
