Enrique Iglesias Biography
Enrique Iglesias was born in Madrid, Spain, as the third and youngest child of Filipino socialite and magazine editor Isabel Preysler and Spanish singer Julio Iglesias. Later in adulthood, Iglesias learned that he was born with situs inversus, a rare congenital disorder in which some of the body’s essential organs, like the heart, are situated on the other side of the body from where they would typically be located. Iglesias made his stage debut in a rendition of Hello Dolly at the Miami-based elite high school he attended, Gulliver Preparatory School. Then, in Coral Gables, Florida, he enrolled in the University of Miami, where he studied commerce before leaving after a year. After leaving the University of Miami, Iglesias went to Toronto to record his debut album.

Iglesias and his brothers initially resided with their mother, but in December 1981, Iglesias’ grandpa, Dr. Julio Iglesias Puga, was taken hostage by the violent Basque group ETA. When Enrique was six years old, he and his mother spent a year living in Belgrade, the capital of the former Yugoslavia. Enrique and his brother Julio were sent to Miami with their father and his then-girlfriend, the Venezuelan model Virginia Sipli, for their protection. Their primary caregiver was Elvira Olivares, the nanny to whom Enrique eventually dedicated his debut record.

He came to the US when he was eight years old, and at 15, he started writing music covertly. He spent a year studying business administration at the University of Miami before quitting to focus on his musical career. Iglesias did not want his father to be aware of his ambitions to pursue a music career, nor did he want his well-known last name to help him. He recorded a demo cassette tape in Toronto using a loan from the family nanny, including two English and one Spanish song. By approaching Fernán Martnez, his father’s old publicist, the two promoted the songs while using the persona of a Guatemalan musician, Enrique Martnez. Iglesias secured a record deal with Fonovisa Records.
