Mamman Daura Biography

Mallam Mamman Daura is a Nigerian newspaper editor famous for editing and later managing the New Nigerian from 1969 to 1975. He is most recognizable as the nephew of Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and a prominent member of the infamous Kaduna Mafia. Kaduna Mafia was a loose group of Nigerian businessmen, civil servants, intellectuals, and military officers from Northern Nigeria. Mamman Daura and his family have frequently been in the news for their highly publicized feud with the president’s wife, Aisha Buhari, who once accused them of blocking her from Aso Rock.

Mamman Daura was born in Daura, Northern Region, British Nigeria, in 1939 to the family of Alhaji Dauda Daura, who held the traditional title of Durbin Daura of the Daura Emirate. He was born into a highly respected family. He is known for his close relationship with the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, his uncle. His daughter, Fatima, once stated that her father, Mamman Daura, and Buhari grew up together as brothers and have constantly been in each other’s lives.

Two of Mamman Daura’s daughters have been talked about by the media. Fatima is the most popular of the two. She first gained attention when she recorded a video of the president’s wife, Aisha Buhari, ‘screaming’ at the Dauras in Aso Rock.

Aisha confirmed she was the one screaming in the video. She told BBC Hausa, “I was the one in that video…. It was Fatima, the daughter of Mamman Daura, that shot the video in front of my security and everybody there. She was actually recording the whole thing right in front of me and was laughing and mocking me. They did that because my husband sacked them from the house. He told them to get all their belongings and leave the house for my son (Yusuf) to occupy.”

“I left them and wanted to get to one of the rooms, but they prevented me from getting through. I left them and took another way, yet I met the store locked.” Fatima accused the president’s wife of throwing a chair, which almost hit her sister.

He was Chairman of the Nigerian Television Authority in the 1980s and later Africa International Bank (a subsidiary of Bank of Credit and Commerce International). He founded a furniture factory in Kaduna and was chairman of the defunct Nigerian Bank of Commerce and Industry.
