Nigerian Passport: Application Requirements, Renewal Requirements, Status Check & World Rank

An official document proving citizenship in the Federal Republic of Nigeria is the Nigerian International Passport (e-passport). A necessary documentation for international travel is the passport, which also serves as identity. Application Requirements

Nigeria’s international passport requirements are as follows:

Adults (18 years and over)

  • Completed passport application form.
  • Two recent passport-size photographs.
  • Proof of payment.
  • Letter of ID from local government/ state of origin (valid staff ID card attached).
  • Birth certificate.
  • Completed Guarantor’s form (with a photocopy of the data page of the Guarantor’s Nigerian e-passport and one passport-size photograph of the Guarantor).
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable).
  • Name change affidavit (if applicable)

Minors (below 18 years of age)

  • Completed passport application form.
  • One passport-size photograph (signed on the reverse side by consenting parent/s).
  • Birth certificate.
  • Evidence of Nigerian citizenship of parent/s.
  • Letter of consent from both parents (valid court order if one parent is unavailable).
  • Proof of payment

A court ruling and a letter of approval from the State Ministry of Women and Child Development are needed if the child is adopted.

Documents Needed for International Passport in Nigeria

You must submit several documents to be eligible for the passport application procedure. These documents may very well be necessary. Therefore, when applying in person or online for your Nigerian international passport.

For a Standard Passport

  • Local Government letter of identification.
  • Birth certificate/age declaration.
  • Two recent color passport photographs.
  • Guarantor’s form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate / High Court Judge.
  • Parent’s letter of consent for minors under 16 years.
  • Marriage certificate where applicable.
  • Police report in case of lost passport.

For an Official Passport

  • Letter of introduction from appropriate State Government, Federal Government Ministry / Organization.
  • Marriage certificate where applicable.
  • Police report in case of lost passport.
  • Letter of appointment / last promotion.
  • Submit the application with supporting documents to the passport office / Embassy / High commission.

Renewal Requirements

Pick the closest passport office when submitting your initial application for a new Nigerian passport (which is done online). The following criteria must be met to renew a passport, regardless of whether it has already expired or is about to do so:

  • Application letter.
  • Passport booklet.
  • Photocopy of the data page of your passport.
  • Acknowledgment slip and proof of payment.

For unexpired passports

You must justify your renewal application if your passport has a validity period longer than six months.

N/B: The procedure for renewing a Nigerian passport must be completed online. You can pick up your passport once the application process has been completed. After collecting your biometric data, it typically takes 72 hours to process an application for a Nigerian passport renewal. Make careful you apply well in advance because it has taken up to a month to process in certain circumstances. After receiving a text or email notification, you can go to the immigration office to pick up your passport.

Nigerians who reside abroad can make an online application for their Nigerian passport renewal and then visit their local consulate or embassy to present their supporting documentation, have their photos taken, and collect their biometric data.

Checking Your Passport Status

Log on to www.trackimmigration.gov.ng, input the necessary information (passport application id and passport reference number), and you will receive a prompt response regarding the status of your passports. You can find the Passport application ID and the Passport reference number in the email address they sent you.

According to the Guide Passport Ranking Index, the Nigerian passport is ranked 96th out of all passports worldwide. The ranking of the Nigerian passport is based on the level of global admission it provides to holders.
