Beyoncé’s Name To Make Its Debut In French Dictionary

Beyoncé’s name is set to be etched into French history.

The 42-year-old singer is among 40 individuals featured in the Larousse dictionary, as her name emphasizes her Louisiana Creole ancestry, according to French publication France 24 and the U.K. newspaper The Times. Beyoncé is described as a “American singer of R&B and pop” in the dictionary, where she is listed as a proper noun.

The Times reports that she is one of the many French and international figures chosen for the 2024 edition of the 1905 encyclopedic dictionary Petit Larousse Illustré. An annual list of 150 terms and people well-known in French-speaking areas is compiled by a jury, which also chooses the names. Sky News claims that this year has seen the addition of more than 150 new words.

French news magazine Le Point was informed by Carine Girac-Marinier, head of Larousse’s dictionaries and encyclopedias, that a large number of the words “reflect concerns, developments or strong movements this year.” As reported by The Times, Girac-Marinier further stated that it was critical that the populace upheld the “Pet Larousse values — excellence and promotion of French culture.”

NBA star LeBron James, actress Cate Blanchett, and Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan are among the other names that have been added to the latest edition. Since her mother’s grandparents’ last name was “Beyincé,” Beyoncé’s name was first spelled that way.

On her birth certificate, the hospital spelled her mother Tina Knowles’ maiden name incorrectly and refused to correct it, therefore it was recorded as “Beyoncé.”
