Davido Narrates How His Music Finally Got His Father’s Approval

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido recounts how his father recognized that his music was becoming popular.

Davido discussed the beginning of his career and how he eventually gained his father’s consent to pursue music during an interview on Business Untitled. The Grammy nominee told the famous tale of how, against the wishes of his father, he left Atlanta’s schools to pursue his musical career in Nigeria, which ultimately resulted in his business mogul father having him imprisoned.

When his father realized that his music was becoming popular, the three-time Grammy nominee said it was when the president used his hit song “Dami Duro” as his ringtone. Although he made no mention of the president or the nation, Davido is probably referring to the former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who presided over the country from 2010 to 2015.

The singer also spoke about his father’s support for his craft, stating that he listens to his all his albums and gives him at least a paragraph on each track. During the conversation, Davido discussed his plans as a businessman outside of music. He disclosed that he owns Coco business Productions, which he characterizes as a media business for creatives.
