INEC Claims Bode George Lied About Its ICT Department

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted rumors that Femi Odubiyi, a former commissioner for science and technology in the state of Lagos, served as the organization’s IT director. Bode George, a former deputy national chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was mentioned in certain media outlets as suggesting that the committee picked Mr. Odubiyi, a Bola Tinubu supporter, as one of its directors.

But on Tuesday, INEC rejected the assertion. According to Festus Okoye, the commission’s National Commissioner and Head of the Information and Voter Education Committee, no one by that name works in the ICT Department. He said that none of the IT employees of the commission had ever held a political appointment in any state of the federation and are all career officers. Thus, he asked the general public to ignore the tale.

In other INEC-related developments, opposition parties have accused INEC of corruption following the presidential and National Assembly elections that elected Mr. Tinubu of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) two weeks ago. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP, the other three leading contenders, have all rejected the outcome. The Election Petition Tribunal has already been approached by Messrs. Obi and Atiku.
